Love Me Tinder, Love You Birdee

Hot off the literal press! A brand new (super) short story for Birdee, this time exclusive to their quarterly newspaper. You can buy it in selected newsagents or at their website for $4.

It’s a bit ridiculous in this age of the internet and the huge audience and exposure it brings with it, but there’s always something a little bit extra special about seeing your name and work in print. Call me old fashioned, there.

And then call me modern and oh so current, because this piece is a (hopefully) humorous look at diving into the world of online dating via Tinder.

Happy reading!

Short Story: The Subject

It’s been a while since I shared any actual writing on here, so here’s a short thing/concept I wrote a month or so ago. I think it’s probably the writing equivalent of a doodle. A woodle?

Anyway, enjoy!

The Subject has been accepted for publication in Perihelion magazine.

Link coming in October!

Just over a month ago (on my birthday, in fact) I was approached by BirdeeMag to write a thousand word story on the subject of periods, sponsored by Carefree as part of their Period’s Happen, We Might As Well Be Real About It campaign. This is what I came up with!

Updates: Short Stories and Interviews

And an article about me and the book came out in my hometown’s news blog. So it’s been a pretty cool day!

…which obviously means I’ve gotten exactly zero work done.

Short Story: Sext Best Thing

Warning: some language, some body parts.

The phone sat on her pillow, playing innocent. But even through the dimming screen the text message was clear. Staring at her from inside its obnoxious little blue bubble.

‘Hey nudes?’

Her cheeks were still burning, her heart pounding embarrassingly from the shock of it.

‘Hey nudes?’

Okay, so he’d seen her naked before. Plenty of times. But this was the first time he’d asked for a record of it. Nude pictures just felt like a whole new level of intimacy. After all, wasn’t it actually just a way of saying ‘Hey, I trust you not to put my tits on the internet?’

But if he was ready to cross into this new relationship zone of trust and HD arse shots, shouldn’t he have been a little less casual about it? And maybe have been on his way to the Great War, or announcing his early onset Alzheimer’s?

Roaches: A Short Story

A short story I wrote a long time ago, which wound up being published in a literary anthology in 2009. My style had changed a little over the years, and hopefully matured, but this story gets the odd bit of positive feedback and I’m posting it here as a reminder to myself to write more shorts.

Warning for a dystopian future, some gore and some swearing. Oh and cockroaches. Lots of cockroaches.
